Big Buy

I would like to start out with this:

I now have a complete set of Arabian Nights, and I was able to bring in the last of the [Light Mana Symbol] cards I was looking for.  All three of these cards came from the same trader, and I can only assume it was a new CS trader looking to build up his balance.  I was very happy to get these and finish out that set!  Now I really only have the ABU sets left!

I needed to order something from Amazon and I did not have enough for some reason, so I picked up this Fat Pack.  I know, buying these things on Amazon is stupid because I way over pay, but I was lazy and there is no excuse.  I also really did not need to pick this up right away, but it was low enough on price so I just figured I would pick it up.

And now for the title buy!  While I could have picked this up months ago before the latest Reserve List pop, I just decided to pick this one up.  This rounded out the Tempest block for me, and now I really only need to get Urza's Legacy and Urza's Destiny for the big older sets.

I could have picked up this box a while back from a trader on CS, but CardSphere did not have the MSRP prices uploaded yet.  The trader was willing to part with his box for $800, and that was the price I was looking to pay, but the CS site was not posting those boxes just yet.  Months later, the RL popped again, so I just decided to bite the bullet and pick this up.  Hopefully I can get that Urza's block closed out, but that might take a lot longer to get done.

This was the first booster box I picked up with the Power 9 sales.  I am still trying to figure out what I need to do with the rest I need.  I have had thoughts of just Buylisting my Beta Power to ABU for their sealed boxes, but I just can't seem to pull that trigger yet.

And it is sexy time

This is a pretty nice update, and I had been wanted to send this update for a long time on one of the new items, but then I received a bunch of trades from CardSphere so I am just going to put them all in this update.  Let's start off with the sexy time update.

That's right!  I was one of the lucky few to actually get the Hasbro site to work in my favor and picked up the SDCC 2018 set!  I keep hearing about issues on their site, but I really did not have an issue, and I thought I was pretty slow to the punch.  Honestly the only issue I have is that they accepted a PO Box as a ship to address, but as policy they do not ship to PO Boxes.

I put in an inquiry ticket with the Hasbro site when I had not received my SDCC set for a couple weeks, and they let me know that it is being returned because they do not ship to PO Boxes, but working with the support person I was able to re-ship the package to my home address.  Finally after a month of waiting, it showed up!

I just hope I can get those Masterpiece boxes from Ravnica.  At least I know that I have to ship to my home address.  And yes, I Perfect Fit Sleeve all the cards and put them back in the case.

Next!

Arabian Nights count is now at 3!  I was really hoping to have it at 2, but the sender mis-counted his inventory.  But hey, I am very happy with getting in one of these.  The prices are going higher and I am just happy to be getting these cards in.

This one was not a big pickup, but all together it was a good pickup.  Fat Packs are not high priority, but getting this done is a wonderful sight.

Sealed Mirrodin booster box is just a great add.  One of the first Modern sets, and a much out of print set.  One more box, and I will have the block.  I was pretty surprised to be getting this to tell you the truth.  Just to see that there are still some booster boxes not opened is amazing.  It is a lovely pickup for the collection.

***

So now for the big sends.

That is right.  I sent out two more pieces of power to a wonderful trader on CardSphere.  He was the same fella I sent the Mox Pearl to, and he is looking to get trade into a set of Power 9, and I am more than happy to accommodate him and his goal.  Since he is such a large trader on CS, it gives me a lot of comfort that he will be a trust worthy trader.

I know, I know...  Don't get rid of your power, but I am tired of holding on to so much of it that I do not use.  I have a full Beta, Unlimited, and ICE.  I do not need any more.  I figure I have enough for 2 Vintage decks, and 1 CUBE, what more could you need?

Why Sealed Boosters?

Why in the hell would I think about trying to collect sealed product from each of the sets?  Booster boxes?  What is the purpose to take these products, put them in a glass case and stare at them?

I thought I would take some time and go through why I think this is important for the complete collection.  Magic the Gathering is a playable game and keeping products like this locked up just seems silly.  There is no way to enjoy the game if cards are in an unopened packs, but this is my rational as to why I want have a complete collection including sealed booster boxes.

Back in 1994, when I started to play this game, I could not get enough cards.  I was opening packs for commons so I could build more decks.  I was opening starter decks to get more land, so I could build more decks.  I just wanted more cards, and the only way to get them at the time were to crack packs.  Why would I spend $20 on a Shivan Dragon when I could get 8+ packs for that same cost.

I got a job working 1 day a week and my LGS on Sundays so I could get the 20% employee discount, and I would take my paycheck from that job to spend on sealed booster boxes to open.  I was picking up as many packs as I could to crack.  I was an addict...  All the while, my father was also playing and buying up cards, but to my surprise he was also buying sealed product and not opening it.

He would throw local tournaments and need sealed product for the prize support.  He would pick up sealed booster boxes and stash them away for the future prize support of those said tournaments.  I recall seeing the stacks of booster boxes just sitting there, and drooling.

There wasn't anything like draft back then.  We did have a sealed format, but that was normally played at pre-release tournaments, and the tournaments that he threw were not large enough to get WoTC support.  We also did not run a gaming store, and would just rent out some space in a run down mall with a small sports card store that also sold Magic the Gathering cards.  We would supply the judges, prize support, and players while the sports card store would supply the singles to sell to said players.  The store owner would just speak with the mall, and get access to a store front that was close to his store, and we would setup the tables and bring the games.

Let's just say Apache Plaza mall was on it's last legs, and it was only a matter of time for it to get demolished for more housing, so they were quite open to allowing open spaces to use by anyone that would come to the mall.  Or they were so broke that they did not care about people breaking the rules.

I remember the Sports Card shop owner also dabbling his hands in Bennie Babies, and how silly I thought it was to buy those, and how much it reminded me of Cabbage Patch Dolls.  But I also remember how much pause I had about Magic the Gathering in considering it as a long term hold.  At the time, it was considered a flash in the pan like Bennie Babies, and not considered a long term collectable.

I agreed with that rational in considering Magic the Gathering cards a non-collectable.  It was a playful game to me, and not something to speculate on.  I was just having fun collecting and playing, going back to thinking about how I could make money off of my hobby was just a bad feeling.

All during my Middle school and high school era I was big into sports cards.  I had been collecting sports cards and followed Minnesota Twins since 1987 and their World Series win.  I just loved buying packs and opening them.  Collecting full sets.  Sorting and organizing my cards so I could trade them to other kids collecting baseball cards.

My father could see what I was interested and felt like it was a good thing to do together.  He and I started a company to go to sports card shows to sell cards.  We would buy in bulk, open packs, and display our best cards to sell to people.  We would also buy collections to build inventory for older cards.  It was a real business and that was the problem.  It took my hobby and turned it into something I needed to do to make money.  It kind of took the fun out of it for me.  Rather than spending weekend sorting my cards to see what cool new rookie I could follow, it was now something I needed to spend time to see what cool new rookie was out there so I could sell his card for cash.

I was not going to let Magic the Gathering cards get turned into some speculation play where I was interested in $$$ rather than playing and collecting.  At this point it is 1996, we were throwing tournaments every weekend, Alliances was released and Mirage was coming out.  I could care less if Magic cards were going to turn into a flash in the pan trend.  If it did, I could just buy up more cards cheaper.  If it didn't, then I could just keep collecting and be happy.  I was just interested in playing games with people I enjoyed to be around, and have some fun.

On the other end, my father was interested in turning a profit.  He had a Master of Business Administration degree and was constantly looking for the angle on how he could turn things into making money, almost to a fault.  So he kept buying up sealed product for these tournaments, and started to expand the amount of tournaments he did hold.

He would team up with other comic book stores to hold their tournaments, and got a pretty big following.  About that same time, other stores that sold Magic the Gathering cards started to do their own tournaments with prize support.  It was not a thief of ideas but more of a evolution of the game, and the only logical step was to start doing more tournaments for the player base.  This also brought in a new revenue stream for those stores.  Not only could they make money on selling packs and singles, but now they could hold tournaments in their stores and charge a fee to each player.  Then hand out prizes to the top folks and keep the profits.

This of course took players away from his tournaments and shifted them into the stores where they could buy their cards and get store credit for being the best store player.  My father kept doing the mall tournaments until they shut the doors, as the sports card shop owner could not run his own tournaments, and liked the additional customer base he could try and sell his Bennie Babies to.  I want to say that there were some parents of the MTG players that did actually buy some of those things.

My father's collection went right up to the Urza's block, trailing off at Urza's Destiny.  He had sealed product from Revised to Stronghold.  After that, he stopped collecting all together.  There is no coincidence that Everquest was released in 1999 and that he stopped collecting Magic the Gathering cards at the same time.  My father went from 100% in one hobby to 100% in another hobby, but he never got rid of the previous hobby.

So in a way I am really just trying to finish what my father started way back in the day.  A playset of every card, and a sealed booster box of every set.  Call me crazy or stupid.  Keep telling me that it is going to be impossible to find someone that would buy my collection at list prices, and I will never actual see gains from all the hard work.  I don't care.  That is not the point of why I am doing this.

If you play Magic the Gathering, wouldn't it be cool to have every card at your disposal, for any deck you ever wanted to make?  Or have any sealed product to run a draft from if you wanted?  Or to make a bed out of Booster boxes so you can sleep on it?   Or just to look at a rack with every single card and sealed booster box, with every card you would ever need.  Just to say you did it.  I was one of the lucky few to ever accomplish such a feet.  I was that crazy fucker.

Isn't every crazy dream just considered stupid at some point in time.  If I could only see his face at finishing his goal, priceless.

Sealed Core Product

A small little update right here.  A couple of sealed boxes came in, one from CardSphere and one from Card Kingdom.

So this is the one I got from CardSphere.  With a ton of trading I was able to pick this up in my PO Box.  Nothing really special, but it is an older Core Set.  There is not a lot in the set, and it was more of a lower on the list pickup, but hey someone sent me this box for a bunch of bulk I sent out.

This one from Card Kingdom on the other hand was a quick buy.  I was basically just tooling around some LGS sites seeing what was out there, and they had this one up for $499.99.  Weeks ago I was looking around on MTGGoldfish.com and saw that 4th Edition booster boxes were going for over $1000.00!  I know it was an impulse buy, but seeing the price lower than $500 I just had to pick it up.

This buy of course flipped  on the need to move the extra Power 9 cards I had, and I was able to find someone I trusted on CardSphere to do business with.

I actually just made my first withdraw from the site, and it was really easy.  The only fee I ended up paying was the withdraw fee from CardSphere, as I was worried that I would have to pay another fee with PayPal.

MN Meet-up with a play on Power

Last night I was able to meet up with Michael (one of the founders of CardSphere), Bodey (another user on CardSphere), and another MTG player.  He was in town for a family trip, and setup a nice little meet up at my LGS!

It was a really good meeting, and we talked about a lot of things.  There was a lot of CardSphere talk, and it was really interesting to hear about what it is like to run a site like theirs.  It sounds like a lot of work, and I am just really happy to have folks like Michael running the site.  It is pretty amazing to think about all the work that they do, at the same time keeping their day jobs, and saving some time to spend with family!

Just makes me think I should not complain about not having any time to get the things I want to get done.

I was also known as "The guy who sent the Pearl" because last week I sent a Mox Pearl to another user on CardSphere.  It was the second piece of power that has been sent through the site, and I was the lucky sender of the first piece of power too!

I am starting to ship off some of my power in order to finish up my sealed products.  I am just tired of sitting on Power 9 cards while there are really good people out there just waiting to own some of it themselves.  So really, if I can get what I need for the collection, and get some of these cards out in the wild, it is a win/win for me.  More Vintage players and I get to fulfill my dreams of the collection of a lifetime.

So this was traded away in order to pay for cards that I have already purchased, and a sealed box of 4th Edition that is coming in the mail.  I am also refunding the cost of the Ravnica: City of Guilds box I got earlier this year.  There was a trader that let me know they had the box sitting and waiting, so I decided to just deposit enough for the trade.  It got me a badge and a nice box of Ravnica!  So now, it is time to put the money back into the family spending account since I have the extra cash.

I am hoping that with these new trades, I will be able to post some more updates with trades I am making to finish up the collection.

I broke down, again

Total Card Count: 205

So I am getting like 3 sealed booster boxes in, and I just traded away something really expensive so I am expecting some extra MTG cash, and I just lost it and went spending on Standard cards that I needed... Again... At my LGS...

I know, I know!  I am supposed to wait until after rotation to pick this stuff up, but I just could not help it!  I could have maybe saved like $100 if I would have waited, but you know I am supporting my LGS!  Yeah, supporting the LGS, that is what I am going to go with today!

I did only pick up cards I needed, and there was not any speculation going on.  Ok that is a mistake, I did grab a bunch more of those Battlebond dual lands.  I do want to keep grabbing those as longs as I can.  I really like those cards and what they provide to the EDH community.

So yeah, lets see what I picked up this weekend...

I know, what the hell is this thing?  Well I traded one away and I did not want to cancel the send because I just hate that, so I took the mistake and sent one out of the collection.  This is the replacement of that send.

Here are Battlebond Mythic Rares I needed for the first print playsets.  I do not really think these will go anywhere, but I am going to pick them up.

Here are those Battlebond lands I love so much.  I would not call this a speculation, but there is hope that they will go up in price later down the line and I can trade them for other cards I might need.

I snagged these because I think they will be powerful when the Ravnica sets get released, but it is pure speculation and I wanted to grab them before they might pop.

So yeah, $7 I could not pass it up for the playset finish.

I was really trying to finish out my Amonkhet and Hour sets, but these were the only 2 that were available.  Still need one more for the complete Hour playset.

Here are the Rivals of Ixalan I picked up, and yes it is about 1 year to soon to be grabbing these, but with Ravnica coming back, and mana fixing will be around I thought I would just try and grab all the mythics before they might pop with some new standard deck.

And yes, same deal with Ixalan.  I just wanted to grab all the mythics at lower prices before they popped with some new Standard deck that comes out of the rotation.  I might have jumped the gun, and it is a mistake considering my plan, but I just did it.

Ok so this last one I just had to do.  It is something I really wanted and I love this card.  This is not a speculation and everyone of these went into my collection.  I just love this card in EDH.  It is just a fun lifesaver.  There are so many board wipes, and this is just the perfect counter to those.  I do tend to play pretty aggressive, so this fits in really well with my decks.

So yeah, that is it.  I still need to get my new sealed booster boxes in, and I really hope my send goes through.  The USPS said someone signed for it, but the trader said he was not home.  So I am a little afraid on this one.  He is a really well known trader, but I have read a Reddit post about a signature before on a package, and it did not end up well for the sender.  I do not think the trader is doing something funny, and I am just scared something strange happened.  It is just cardboard, and I cant take it too seriously, but I will update the blog after everything gets figured out.

I am off to a CardSphere meet up!  Hope to have posts about it soon!

Break time

I am going to be taking a break from updating my blog until I start doing more with Magic the Gathering.  I am not going to sell the collect...
