Card Count: 92
About time! 2 trades came in today, and it was a pleasant surprise. One from Deckbox and one from CardSphere. The Deckbox trade was mainly cards from Welcome decks and Starter 1999, but I did get 4 cards to the card count.
CardSphere on the other hand was a nice pickup. I got in 8 wonderful cards to the count!
Here we go!
Welcome Deck 2017
Starter 1999
6th Edition
The Elvish Archers was a bit dirty, but I am still putting it in the collection.
CardSphere Incoming!
This was a nice little pickup with four 4th Edition cards. That Relentless Assault was the first one I got in this Edition. I was also really happy about that Lord of the Undead from the 8th Edition, only need one more, and that Wrath of God was also a pretty site.

The Slowdown
So yeah, that slow down I was talking about? Completely real.
Considering the small tradelist I am keeping up with, the issues I am finding with Deckbox, and waiting for the influx of new traders on CardSphere, it has been a quiet couple of weeks. Since I have a very small wishlist on Deckbox, people are not willing to get a trade done because of shipping costs or I just don't have enough to trade for. I can only assume that the CardSphere slowdown is based on already receiving all the cards I needed from the current traders, so now I need to wait for new traders in order to get more cards.
I am expecting some cards coming in from both CardSphere and Deckbox. The slowdown with CardSphere has been extreme considering the cards I was getting in the beginning. Even after adding a bonus to most of my cards on my Wants list, the cards are just not coming in as much as they used to be.
Deckbox on the other hand, it has been really difficult to get the anything done. I do have three trades coming in, but there are only 4 Phase 1 cards within those trades. I have had to keep sprinkling in Standard cards to get the trades done. It is nice to see those Phase 2 cards coming in, but I highly doubt I am going to be able to finish up any Phases on Deckbox. There is just not enough movement on that site for me. It did work really well for the downtrades, but now that I am only looking for small amounts of cards, it is getting more and more difficult to get anyone to complete a trade.
This is where I feel CardSphere does have it's advantages. I can still build up my balance in order to get more cards, and then just wait for those cards to come in. I have been sending off Common, Uncommon, and Basic Lands that adds up higher than $1.00. Most of the trades have been like this and that balance keeps going up and up.
I hope at some point I will be able to get the higher priced cards I am looking for considering that I am not looking to cash out of the site. It is very interesting to be able to send out mostly bulk and think about getting back cards of value. For instance, I have around $300 on my balance, and I could technically get high valued cards if I had them on my Wants. I honestly believe that I could get those higher priced cards if I offer up 100% of the value.
I am going to wait to finish up with Phase 1 and Phase 2 to test that theory.
Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I will have some more updates on the add's that are coming in.

Good old Deckbox
Card Count: 104
Wrangled in a rare Deckbox trade. The pickins are slim over there on that site for me. With the 14,000+ traders, there are only 58 traders worldwide that have cards I am looking for, and not one of those traders has more than $20.00 worth of cards that I need. My Receiving list on CardSphere is empty, and has been for almost a week, but there are only a couple thousand traders on that site.
I have hope that CardSphere will ramp up, and I have a good balance to get all the cards I need, but there is a definite slow down after that initial push of cards I got.
This is getting to be so bad, that I am seriously considering to combine Phase 1 and Phase 2, but pay out the Revised Tournament deck for the last Phase 1 trader. What I am afraid of, is that people have cards to fill out my orders, but don't want to trade because of the low trade pricing. It is something I have seen myself do. If the trade does not go above $1 I don't even pay attention to the trader, because of the shipping costs.
Anyway, Here we go!
Some 9th Edition adds. I was really happy about the Elvish Champion.
I know, it is one of those Phase 2 cards, but honestly it really is the only way I have been able to get anything done on Deckbox.
What the fuck!? Standard?! Yes, standard. Again, need to get some trades done somehow, so we search for the standard cards to fill out those orders. If I could only ship for free.
So yeah, 104 left and I am stalling out. I really need to figure out what to do next. Granted, with the Legacy sets, I just did the final purchase and finished up on my own, but I did not think it was going to be this hard with the Modern cards.
It just brings to light how many people do not trade online at all. With millions of players, and 14,000+ Deckbox traders combined with 2000+ on CardSphere traders, it seems like the trading population is very tiny compared with the playing folks. I wonder what population even knows of online trading, or if they are so timid of the whole "online" aspect they do not even bother with it.
I mean, you are giving someone else your address, and letting them know where you live. And that is the most viable place where you would keep your collection. I can see why a lot of folks would shy away from it.

Hour of Devastation Results
Opened:
6 Booster boxes
3 Bundle
Total boosters opened: 246
Total cards added: 3936
Total needed for set: 900
Planeswalker Deck Cards: 40
It was a pretty long weekend trying to get all this opened, sorted, inventoried, sleeved, posted, printed, and labeled. Going to try and keep this type of post done per set, just to show results of the pre-order opening.
As it says up top, I increased the purchase of the pre-order by 2 booster boxes, and kept the 4 bundles going, ending up at 8 booster boxes and 4 bundles.
Cost breakdown:
Booster Boxes: $90.00
Bundle Packs: $35.99
Total Cost Basis: $926.81 (with tax)
Mythic Rares needed: 17
Rares needed: 2
Set Needs: $96.52
Planeswalker Deck Needs: $65.40
Total added to Trade: $581.07
Rares: $76.30
Uncommon: $149.87
Common: $322.24
Land: $18.44
Tokens: $14.22
With this new purchase plan, I did end up opening a full case for the collection, and I kept the other 2 booster boxes for the collection. I also did keep one of the Bundles for the collection, and opened the other three. All in all I think it was a good opening, but also with a small set we normally get everything we need. I am going to miss small sets for sure, just because it is going to take more trade to complete the sets, and those 2 years waiting for rotation kind of suck.
I know, I can trade for standard cards, but in my mind that is a waste of trade inventory. Being patient and holding off for the rotation prices is always better cost wise. I am finding that with CardSphere I am able to build up a balance that could go towards this type of stuff, considering that I am trading away a lot of bulk to get my CardSphere balance. I am just not sure how much of that Planeswalker deck inventory is out there.
I am going to try and add more pictures as I open the product, just to show how I go about in tackling these tasks in such a short time. This here is what the collection for HOU all sleeved up. And yes I am still keeping with the perfect fit per card in the collection. I have found that it is really good in keeping the conditions of the cards while I move them in and out of playing sleeves.
I am also keeping every rare in a sleeve. I use much older sleeves that I have gathered over the many years of playing, and I have found this to be wonderful in moving cards in and out of the trade binder. It allows me to not worry about the conditions as I shuffle them around.
This is the end product for the collection. Every Standard set gets put into their own shoe box, sleeved and separated by the labeled card. This way I can build standard sets fairly quick, and I can sort the decks I no longer play with really fast as well. I am also able to sort these cards into the Modern boxes very efficiently after rotation.
So the process is to open all the product, organizing them into Common, Uncommon, Rare, Mythic Rare, Basic Land, Token, and Foil while I am opening the packs. I also go a step further and set them into piles of the color. I should be getting more pictures next time to kind of show how I do it. This way I can sort and organize them very fast after I have all the booster packs opened.
I also do it this way because there is so much product that I open I know I will get a playset of the Commons, Uncommons, and Basic Lands. I can quickly fill out my spreadsheets to show that, and then all I really need are the Rares and Mythic Rares to inventory. That will give me a quick snapshot of what will go into the inventory and what I can post on Deckbox and CardSphere for trading. Of course, now I am posting all the cards I have extra on those sites, but it allows me to get the more sought after cards up faster while I sort and inventory the less desired bulk.
But more importantly it will give me what I will be looking for, so I can update my Apple Notes with what I am looking for to complete my playsets.
This is the copy that I carry around with me on my cell phone, so I can go shopping at other LGS's and know exactly what I need per set. I highlight the Planeswalker cards in Blue so I know that they are cards I can only get out of the Planeswalker decks.
So yeah, I open all the packs separating them into their piles. I first sort and inventory the Rare and Mythic Rare cards. With the Rare and Mythic Rares being sorted and inventoried my spreadsheet is pretty much up to date with what I need. I will then add the extra Rares and Mythic Rares to my Deckbox and CardSphere sites.
This also gives me time to perfect sleeve them to protect them right away after I know what is extra and what I need for the collection. I also perfect fit the foils while I open the boosters to try and cut down on the curling that occurs when there is too much exposure to the air.
From here, I will sort and inventory the Foils. Adding the extra foils to the trade sites, but all the foils will get inventoried into the foil boxes I have just for those cards. I am still on the fence with trading all my foils away, just because I am still not sure if I am going to go for foils.
Now comes the sort, the dreaded sort. I need to know how many of every card I have in my inventory at all times. This is what started my multi-year long journey into this blog. How it works the best with me is I start with the Tokens, then move to the basic lands, and then the Uncommons, and I end with the Commons. Since I already have the Rares, Mythic Rares, and Foils done I just need to finish up on these stacks. And I always hit the low hanging fruit first because it makes me believe I am accomplishing things, and I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I get something done.
With the sort comes a great opportunity to correct the spreadsheet. With every new set, there are always some cards we import onto our spreadsheets that are categorized incorrectly. Some are showing up as common when they are uncommon, or you get a black card but it is really white. So with the sort we also do the count, where not only do I sort every card into the specific card it is, but I also count how many of that card I have. I then go into the spreadsheet and update my quantities of how many I have. Here is where I can correct what I have pulled for the pricing spreadsheet.
This is a very important step, just because I use the inventory spreadsheet to make my labels. It allows me to correct everything before I make those labels, so that they are very accurate. I seriously hate reprinting labels because of mistakes. I used to do the pull once the set was posted, and then make the labels before I opened any packs. Let me tell you how much that sucked. I always had to go back, edit the labels, add the tokens and other cards they missed, and then reprint the labels they missed. It sucked so much that I just wait until after the sort and count to do any of the printing of labels.
While I am counting, I keep the playsets off to the side and make sure those get counted toward the Collection count and not into the trade inventory. Normally once I get done with a color/rarity I will sleeve up the collection cards and put them into the shoebox sorted with the other cards. That way I can get the sleeving done in small chunks and it is not such a large amount of sleeving. Baby steps! Always baby steps! It makes you feel much more accomplished, than taking on very large tasks.
Ok, so we opened the packs. Then we sorted the cards. Counted the cards, and inventoried them. Sleeved up the collection cards, and piled up the trade cards. Now I need to get those trade cards into the BCW boxes. I keep the commons, uncommon, and rare/mythic all separate. The common cards will go into storage.
I keep all the commons sorted by expansion, then color, and then alphabetically. I have found this is the easiest way to keep them organized for trades.
Uncommons are done the same way, but since those are a lot less in quantity I keep all those separated by meta; Legacy, Modern, Core, and Masters.
And then all the rares get stored away in their own boxes. All of those cards are sleeved and protected. From time to time I will go in and pull out the uncommons or commons that increase in price. Usually I will grab the cards that are over $1.00, sleeve them up and put them in my trade boxes. The cards in this box is what I use to re-populate my trade binder with.
Ok, so we have the cards opened, sorted, counted, inventoried, sleeved, stored, and now we need to print labels and get those on separators. I have another post on what I do for labels and card separators and you can find it here:
http://dogonsiereht-mtg.blogspot.com/2014/06/card-separators.html
I will do my magic to massage the data into the labels, and then print out those labels to put them on the card separators.
All in all, I think I spent 18 hours through the whole process to add this set into my collection. I have already sent out some cards through CardSphere since adding them to the site. I think I could have cut this down by a couple hours, but I was marathoning Game of Thrones before the Season 7 premiere and got distracted here and there.

Hour of Devastation!
Here we are again with another set release. If you remember I was limiting the pre-order to 6 booster boxes and 4 bundles, but this time I increased the order to 8 booster boxes and 4 bundles. I am only increasing my order because they are no longer doing Masterpieces and I feel that I don't need to stash away so much cash for those purposes.
This is what we are going to be opening tonight!
Here are the collection boxes.
And of course we needed to pick up these pieces of shit.
While I was there, you know I just had to go shopping for some sexy cards, and since we still trying to trade for Phase 1 I didn't really look for those cards. But I did pick up some nice little additions. I don't know where they are getting all the Unhinged lands, but I grabbed my last Plains I needed.
I really need to work on that centering.
Finally found me one of these! I don't know why, but it was really difficult to find this one. Now I just need that Platinum Angel to finish the set.
Grabbed this guy as well. There is still a number of Invocations that I do need, but I am not in a rush to grab them. I know they just released the other half of the Invocations set with Hour, but I still have about 2 years before they go away and the prices will increase. For now I will take it slow and pick them up here and there like I did with the Inventions.
Remember that we still need a fairly large number of Amonkhet cards for the playsets, and I really don't think I will finish that playset until after rotation, but I do find myself trading for them to fill out some of the Deckbox trades. Considering that I only need 107 more cards for Phase 1, I think it is safe to get some trades done with Standard cards I need.
So yeah, let's start cracking and see what we get. I will update this blog a little later to see where we end up.
**First Edit**
Must. Sleep. So tired. Only 1 Invocation. 4 Bolas... :-) ZzzZzzZzzzzzzZzzz

As my cousin says
Card Count: 107
As my cousin likes to say, "Kick life in the dick!"
Two more trades in today, and what a beautiful "get in" it was. At first I was thinking, "Oh Balls! I need to get this all inventoried and pictured and sleeved and blogged..." But yeah, it was a good day.
Here we go!
These little guys came all the way from Japan! I don't know if it is me, but all the packages I get from Japan are just packed so well.
Little extra inning Tenth Edition adds... Fuck you basic land!
Oh Rukh you sexy bird chick!
Jok hop all over your face!
Oh what is that? Boom! Betrayers of Kamigawa done!!
What did you say? Boom! Ravnica: City of Guilds done!
Suck on my what? Oh that is right, my goat ass you fucking basic lands! Lorwyn done!
With one gorgeous trade I was able to finish up three sets, and as you can see the bane of my existance (Basic Lands) can suck it hard! So happy to finish out those sets! Seriously, I need 4 more cards to finish out all the expansions and 3 of the 4 are you guessed it, Basic suck ass lands!
Woot woot! I really believe that I would not be able to do this without CardSphere. Who in their right mind would think about trading basic lands to someone?
That is all...

Quality, just quality
Card Count: 122
Got me a big one!
This incoming CardSphere trade was just quality with Legacy and Modern cards. Most of it was core set cards, and I did end up getting a lot of basic land cards, but all in all it was a pretty fantastic package. The cards were all in very good condition.
I also think that CardSphere changed up the way they post cards that are getting sent out. They actually group together the cards that are going to a single trader. I think, before when you started to accept trades they were all separate to the accepted Send. Now, they group all the Sends for a single trader, which helps out when you are packing up the cards.
I am only saying this because I got e-mail after e-mail from this single trader that just kept sending me cards, but they all ended up in a single trade. I am not sure if this was the case before, and it seemed like a new feature.
Here We Go!
Here were some pretty perfect 6th Edition cards. Very surprised on how good the conditions were for such an old set. I was very happy.
I only need 13 more 7th Edition cards for my complete play sets.
I have an issue with keeping my cards centered when I take pictures, but yeah I only got 1 8th Edition card.
These 9th Edition cards were pretty good adds, and the thing I was most excited about with this core set? Yup, you guessed it, the basic lands! I am so tired of trying to get basic lands, but it is pretty impressive to see all those lands in the BCW they reside in.
Tenth Edition and I am just as happy with these basic lands as I was with the other ones!
Oh look, more basic lands but from Lorwyn!!! Fucking 2 more needed! Get in!
A little better with the centering, and I only need 3 more Champions of Kamigawa cards for the playset. Guess what they are? Fuck you basic lands! Fuck you in the goat ass.
So yeah, this is the breakdown of what I am waiting for to complete the playsets.
Sixth Edition: 45
Seventh Edition: 13
Eighth Edition: 11
Ninth Edition: 26
Tenth Edition: 18
Champions of Kamigawa: 3
Betrayers of Kamigawa: 2
Saviors of Kamigawa: 1
Ravnica: 1
Lorwyn: 2
So yeah, 122 more cards left for Phase 1 and I am really really trying hard to not add my Phase 2 wants just yet. I have faith that we will get that final trader and send out that Revised Starter deck.

Love these incoming trades!
Card Count: 196
Holy shit I am below 200! What in the all holy hell is going on!
So yes, I love the trades that just came in for the fact that 10 of the 11 cards I got in finished up playsets! I just love removing the lines I keep track of on my Notes application. It is so fulfilling to delete that line. Also, I finished up my Playsets of the Conspiracy: Take the Crown first prints. Now I think I am going to try for the Conspiracy first prints.
Here we go!
Boom! Expansion done!
This trade actually came in from Deckbox, and it was lovely. 9 of the 10 cards completed playsets, and those are some of my favorite cards to inventory.
I just can't believe that I am under 200...

Could be the slow down
Card Count: 206
I don't know if it is a slow down, or if I have reached peak trading. I always knew there was going to be a time with collecting that there would be a massive slowdown, and I would find it harder to get the cards I need outside of just buying them outright. I was hoping that CardSphere would extend that time, but I don't think they have a critical mass yet on the site with only around 2200 traders.
I saw this with Deckbox during my Legacy phase, where I was trying to get all the older sets complete and I ended up spending $100ish on TCG to just finish all my playsets. I also recall that I did not want to mix up the Legacy / Modern lists, and wanted to completely finish up one list before I started the other. Basically I could have just added my wishlist for Modern and picked up the cards for Legacy within those trades.
To explain what is happening, we have hit a point where the number of cards I am looking to get are so varied that it is hard to trade with just a single person.
Deckbox example: I can find multiple traders with a bunch of cards that I need, but they don't need anything I have. Or, there are a bunch of cards that I have that they need, but the amount of cards that I need from them is so small, that I need to pick up cards I don't need to finish the trade.
CardSphere Example: I have a lovely balance, but the cards they have to send me is usually less than $1.00 so it is not worth it to send the card because of the shipping cost.
I really think it is a combination of each for both sites. With Deckbox I am going to have to start trades that are less than $20 just to find the cards I can get. I still have some hope with CardSphere because it is such a new site, that I will be able to see some cards trickle in. Now it could be the summer lull, or I could be seeing peak trading, but I am going to keep on the whole plan to keep trading. I really want to send out a Revised Sealed Tournament deck with the last card I need.
Here we go!
45... 45... That is how many Birds of Paradise I own in the collection. I am missing 2 7th Edition, and 1 Alpha. That is a play set in everything outside of Beta, Unlimited, Conspiracy: Take the Crown. I also have the International Collection Edition and a Korean 4th Edition BoP but we are not counting those.
And...
So yeah, all in all I am going to have to put a little more time in Deckbox trading while I wait for new players to join CardSphere. The question is what will I use my balance on CardSphere for while I wait. Right now I have about $78 for a balance, but remember most of that trading is sending out common / uncommons, so in my eyes it is all profit. I could cash out, but the cost of that is just too much.
I could think about adding some speculation cards I am looking for to use up some of that balance, but then I don't want to not have a balance for the cards I am really looking for. But then do I keep sending out cards to keep that balance going? If I do send out more cards, there is really no hedge that I can do incase there is run on the site and inflation goes crazy. I suppose everything is tracked in US Dollars, so $100 is always $100, so that could be an option and just see how much of a balance I can run up while I wait. There is still a fear that the site will not pay out too. It could just be lost cash and cards.
Either way I think I will concentrate with Deckbox as my active trading, and then keep sending out on CardSphere to build up a balance. I will think about trying to get ABU cards that I need to fill out my sets, I heard that doing that on PucaTrade was a pretty good deal.
I am just so close to finishing and want to keep this going with filling everything out on trades.

When it is too good to be true
Card Count: 208
So I am either early to the game, or there is something that is going to crash, but CardSphere is delivering like no tomorrow. The cards just keep coming in, and I just keep gaining more value than I could have done with Deckbox. I am sending out Commons and Uncommons like no tomorrow. Granted those cards have value, but still it is a simple transaction. I just send out cards, get a balance, and cards just keep coming in. As long as I have a balance and cards on my "Wants" I get something every week.
Now I know with PucaTrade there was inflation, and those points went to complete $0. I do see the fees within CardSphere, and I am not sure that PucaTrade had the same thing, but I am seriously interested in seeing how they manage the economy. I seriously just hope I get the cards I need for my sets before the site goes to hell, but I hope it does not go to hell at all. If I was a collector, and starting any type of goal, I would use the site for sure at this point. There is still a small bit of hesitation that I have about the site, just because what happened to PucaTrade.
Here We Go!!!
This trade was the first trade I had to dispute. I got these two beauties along with Form of the Dragon and Beacon of Unrest (Everytime I see this card I get a flash back to Everquest and hunting that haunted house). The Form and Beacon were from the wrong sets. I sent a chat message to the sender, and he just instructed me to open a dispute and the admin would correct it. It was pretty easy. The admin just checked the chat we had, saw that the sender was sorry and in agreement to disputing the cards. I got my balance back for the cards I did not get, and that was about it. Clean and simple, no fuss. The sender also said that I should just keep the cards. The only thing that I wish was different, once the dispute went through, the cards that I originally wanted should have been added to my "Wants" again. I did check, and noticed they were not there, so I just had to add them again.
This trade also came in, but as you can see the white bordered cards were not NM, but were dirty around the edges. I did not dispute these cards because I did not want to deal with the sender.
Boom!
Pow!
Crash!
Prrrmfffff!
So yeah, this was a great haul, and I just keep knocking down that count number. If all the cards come in that has been committed to me, I should be around 190! That is just fucking insane!
Small little add on:
This came in from my pre-order on Amazon and I have the 4 books in the art set.

Lodestone Bulk
So, I get back from my work trip and open up all the CardSphere cards I have to accept, and I get a bug up my ass to pick up that top spot for cards sent on CardSphere again. So I pack up a bunch of envelopes and send them off to get opened by some lucky traders. Then it looked like I had an open Sunday, so I figured I would head up to the Lodestone to dig through some bulk.
The last time I was up there digging through their basic lands one of the owners said they had some boxes full of "Weird" items that they did not inventory to sell. These were odds and ins they picked up from collections they had purchased. It was mainly duel decks, commander decks, Un-sets, and old vintage cards. It was a pretty good haul too with 2 5,000 count boxes and a couple long boxes.
Let's say that it was a good day to dig through some bulk.
I found this gem!
I was extra happy to find this card considering now I only need 10 more 4th Edition Korean cards for the complete set and it is extremely difficult to find any cards from this set / language.
I also found a ton of Unhinged cards that I need!
Considering I got all the lands I need, I am just happy to find these cards.
I did not think I would be able to fill out the Starter 1999 sets, but here lay some great pickups.
Then to my surprise Starter 2000 showed up!
These are difficult to spot, just cause there is no set symbol, but the copyright date is more toward the middle of the bottom of the card. With a set that only has 53 cards, it is good to be able to pick these up.
Then I saw these ugly ass cards from Portal Second Age.
These were in really bad condition but I figured I would try and upgrade at a later date.
**Edit, these cards are actually Anthology Hurricanes. The Portal Second Age cards have black borders.
I was also able to grab some Arabian Nights bulk.
Now, these just look like just crap that no one wants, but these to me are pure gold. The Moorish Cavalry is both versions, and a wonderful pick up. Considering the amount of older bulks I might try and go for a playset of all those sets.
Antiquities!!!
These were total speculations based off of how useful they can be with Artifacts.
Legends
These were the cards I picked up from Unlimited that I did not need for the set.
And a couple of Alpha.
And the big haul is the Beta cards.
These were the big pickups in my mind. For most of these I only paid $0.50 but there were some really good pickups.
Here are the ABU cards that actually go toward the Phase 3 countdown.
So why is bulk so wonderful? I basically spent 6 hours going through a load full of cards, and just kept pulling cards until I had a serious stack of cards. Any good LGS will see that someone is willing to pay good cash for cards that won't move, and in the meantime I actually grab some cards that are worth something. A lot of those cards that I picked up for $0.50 ended up being over $1.00, and I even picked up some Beta rares that were above $10.00.
Now with most of this older stuff I have no plans to trade or sell, and I am using them to build up the collection for the hopes that later they will be worth more than they are today. In reality it was just wonderful pickups for cheap prices that could not be passed up.
It has been a while, but I really need to do a review on Lodestone Coffee and Games.
